Despite the political uncertainty at the moment I believe that the construction industry is set for a strong year next year. I am optimistic that the demand for and therefore the price of housing will continue to grow and despite rising inflation and pressure on prices of materials, the building market will remain competitive. I am however, concerned about the Skills shortage at the moment and the likelihood that it may not improve for some years. This year the CITB only found apprenticeships for 12 bricklayers in the Lincoln area. This is poor. We need to do more to encourage employers to take on apprentices in high quality, meaningful apprenticeships. An appreciation of the reciprocal benefits of a quality apprenticeship rather than an opportunity for 'cheap labour for the employer' or 'a better alternative to staying on in sixth form for a couple of years' for the apprentice, will both enrich the talent base of our workforce and encourage our young tradesmen and women to remain in the industry.
